I was so excited to start putting my video projects to disc. That excitement disappeared quickly when time after time I had failed attempts at creating quality discs from this machine. Whenever I hit rewind or forward fast or pause, the sound disappeared when I resumed playing the disc. This happened on all eight attempts to record a variety of home-made videos. The project has now sat on hold for two years since I became too frustrated to return to the project–thanks to this awful DVD Recorder+VCR Combo!

    It is JUNK!

My wife received this as a gift for graduation from college. Her mother paid $249 for it at Wal-Mart (we know because we saw it a few days later when we went shopping there). It didn’t work right from day one. When we could get the thing to turn on (which was a total of 15 times) it’s recording quality of anything live was very poor. Lots of skipping and blocking. We also wasted four disks for every one we made when copying home movies from VHS because it kept erroring in the middle and ruined the disk and we had to start all over. We ended up only being able to copy 7 VHS tapes over because it took us so long. I called the company and they said it was a “quality issue” and not covered under warranty. I would have returned it to the store if I had bought it but we didn’t want to ask her mother for the receipt and have her feel bad that she had bought, what turned out to be, a piece of junk. Of course 3 days after the warranty expired, the unit wouldn’t even turn on anymore. Don’t waste your money, this VCR/DVD-R isn’t worth it.

This was a gift, and I was happy to receive it because of the quality of the DVD’s produced — provided a high quality VHS source tape, recorded with a high quality camera, were used. But the on-screen menus are absolutely incomprehensible and even the most simple of actions are met with an inexplicable, baffling, totally maddening “stop sign” icon with no explanation at all of what’s wrong. The most simple copy operations will get the “stop sign” several times in a row even when following the manual religiously and using media that works perfectly in another recorder. Conclusion — good quality if you can ever get it to work, and that’s a tall order.

When my RCA DRC8320N froze (tape & disk stuck) I was just a few days under my 1 year warranty so I was able to send it to Alco Electronics as instructed only to get it back with the tape still stuck and without the remote. I called, again, and was told they had only noted that the DVD was stuck (even though I told them AND stated in the letter sent with the player that both a tape & disc were stuck … it was pretty evident!) so I had to send it back again. I just got it back and it’s not my player nor even the same model. They sent a DCR8335 (which is a cheaper model from what I can tell). Just called the call center again … “Donald” said their system is down so he will have to call me back. Honest to God I’m going to scream!!!

I can’t think of a single good thing about this system. It took forever to rewind tapes, and was very slow in turning off and on, etc. Then the audio randomly went out one day, instead only producing a static sound. The display then went out, and although you could hear the system power up, there was no display. The system then would not open or close to eject VHS or DVDs. The final step was for the system not to respond in anyway. It is now a dead useless piece of junk, and under a year old. Save your money, and do NOT buy an RCA!!
