Verry good image quality.
Also this is the response I got from customer service.
“You will need a receiver. The DVD player has no built in amplification, so it will not be able to produce audio straight to your speakers.”
In other words I’ll have to spend hundreds of dolars to take advantage of the sound. Most of the good receivers have a up-convert DVD built in.
I’m amazed that none of the reviwers mentioned this major flaw.

Sorry that I read the revews on this unit and bought it. What a BIG mistake!!!
From now on I do not belive what anyone say on here!!!
I have a bose 321. The pic actually looks better (less granulation at 480i) then oppo dvd player set at 1080i via hdmi.

This upsampling job was intended for both SD and HD tv’s. It doesn’t work well on either. The 980H has the worst color rendition and motion handling I’ve ever seen in a modern DVD player. It is impossible to get correct skin tones or brilliant images from this player, despite its menu of controls. Skin tones have obvious cyan color casts; all dimly lighted, shadowed, night time, or other low-density scenes have irritating blue or olive-green coloration depending on the cables used. Night scenes are especially awful; not only are all the colors off in dark scenes, but Oppo’s Mediatek chip seems to be juicing up the reds, making them look posterized. Jaggies are everywhere. Every time something moves or a camera pans across a scene the mosquito noise bristles almost violently. The HDMI output cleans up some of it (but definitely not all of it), but motion smearing remains clearly visible. Looks worse on standard SD-TV, but almost as bad on HDTV. The audio has thin bass and ragged treble; the audio menu has options such as “Pop”, “Rock”, etc., but they are too mild to matter. Better to just leave the audio EQ “off”, but even that ain’t so great. Audio dynamics are weak, with an upper-midrange “blast” that’s really annoying even at low volume. Images have a dim and grimy appearance through all outputs. The luminance range seems severely constricted; adjusting the player’s or the tv’s image controls makes it worse. Shadows remain blocked-up with little detail; even with the controls adjusted to min or max, colors and luminance levels just never look right. The image is very sharp but looks artificially enhanced; the natural grain of many movie videos is exagerrated and unpleasant to watch. If you expect to play commercial DVD’s thru the component outputs, forget it; the DVD industry’s moronic copy protection schemes make those outputs useless for all but home-made discs. I see many rave reviews about this product — but I have no idea what those reviewers are seeing or hearing. This Oppo had the latest firmware updates. If it was defective its defects are too numerous to inspire confidence in the company. I spent the best of 48 hours trying to get at least $50 worth of performance from this machine, but it just ain’t there. Probably works well on cheap a/v setups, but its performance with my expensive gear was very poor.

I bought this one because of the glowing reviews. Now that I have used it for a while, is there any problem with it? No. Do I notice any difference that is worth the $70 extra bucks that I paid for it? Neither.

Unfortunately, there are several problems:
- HDMI picture has a rainbow band around it. Could be a TV issue-but then, it stopped outputing at all. Switching cables didn’t help. Changing the output resolution didn’t help.
- Component output is dead. Unplugged the player end of the cable from the old player, connected to this one, nothing. Plugged back into old player, i’ts fine.
- Output resolution switching works very sketchy. Whether from remote or front panel, it simply doesn’t switch most of the time.
